How long a pink slip lasts in NSW

A pink slip is valid for six months from the day of the inspection, and your registration has to be renewed inside that window. It is not twelve months, even though the inspection itself is a yearly requirement. That gap is what catches people.

Does a pink slip last six months or twelve?

The confusion is understandable. The inspection itself is a yearly thing: most light vehicles over five years old need one every year before the rego is renewed. So people reasonably assume the report lasts the year too.

It doesn’t. The report is valid for six months from the date of the inspection, and your registration has to be renewed inside that window. Miss it, and the report expires with nothing to show for it. You pay for another inspection.

Why the six months exists

A safety check is a snapshot. It says the car met the standard on the day someone looked at it. Six months later, tyres have worn, a globe has blown, a wiper blade has split. The further you get from the inspection, the less the report is actually telling anyone.

So the window is not administrative fussiness. It is the period Transport for NSW is prepared to treat the snapshot as still true.

How early can you get a pink slip?

You can renew your registration up to three months before it expires if you have a renewal notice. That gives you a comfortable overlap: get the inspection somewhere in the two months before the rego is due, and you have plenty of room without pushing the six months.

Booking the inspection five or six months early does nothing for you. The rego date doesn’t move, and the report just gets closer to expiring while it waits.

There is one timing trap worth knowing about if you renew for six months at a time rather than a year. In that case you have to pay the CTP insurance and renew the registration no later than 21 days after the registration expires. That is a much shorter leash than the pink slip’s six months.

What happens when a pink slip expires?

Nothing dramatic. The report simply stops counting. There is no fine, no flag against the car, and no penalty for letting it lapse. You just can’t use it to renew, and you pay for a new inspection.

Which is the annoying part, because the second inspection checks the same car against the same standards. It is the easiest money to avoid wasting in this whole process.

What counts as the start date

The six months runs from the date of the inspection, not from when you paid, not from when you booked, and not from the start of the month. If the technician inspected the car on 3 March, the report is good until 3 September.

That matters if the car failed the first time. The clock starts again from the reinspection that passes, because that is the inspection that produced the report.

Does the six months change anything for the car?

No. The rego expiry date is set by your registration, not by the inspection. Passing a pink slip early doesn’t extend your rego, and it doesn’t shorten it either. The report is a key, not a clock: it unlocks the renewal, and the renewal sets the dates.

If the car fails, the repair window is a different number again. Fix the faults within 14 days and take it back to the same inspection station, and there is no second inspection fee. After 14 days, you pay again. There is more in what happens after a failed pink slip.

A practical order to do it in

1. Find your rego expiry date, on the renewal notice or through Service NSW.
2. Book the inspection in the month or two before it.
3. Pass, and the result goes to Transport for NSW electronically.
4. Sort your CTP green slip, then pay the registration.

One more thing worth knowing: nothing about the six months is recorded against you if you let it lapse. Transport for NSW simply has no current report for the car. Whoever inspects it next starts from scratch, and so do you.
