From 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2027, NSW takes up to $100 off the registration of a privately registered car, and up to $80 off a motorcycle. It comes off automatically. It doesn’t change anything else about renewing: a car more than five years old still needs its pink slip first.

Who gets the discount

The discount is for cars and other light vehicles, and motorcycles, registered for private use, with a renewal date from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2027. There’s nothing to apply for. If your car is eligible, the discount is already on the renewal notice when it arrives.

On a six-month renewal you get half: $50 off for a car and $40 off for a motorcycle.

Who misses out

Service NSW lists the vehicles that don’t get it:

  • vehicles registered for business use
  • private trailers and caravans
  • plant and heavy vehicles
  • conditionally registered vehicles, such as historic vehicles
  • vehicles already getting a registration concession, discount, refund or rebate

So if you renew the car and the caravan this summer, only the car’s notice comes down.

You still need the pink slip

Renewing works the same way it did before the discount. Most light vehicles more than five years old need a safety inspection each year before the registration can be renewed, counted from the date on the compliance plate. You still need your CTP green slip as well, unless you’re renewing a trailer, a caravan or a conditionally registered vehicle.

The timing hasn’t changed either. A pink slip is valid for six months from the day of the inspection, and once the renewal notice arrives you can renew up to three months before the rego expires. Book the inspection in the month or two before the rego is due, and renew as soon as the car passes.

There’s more on that window in how long a pink slip lasts.

If the rego has already run out

The discount doesn’t change the rules for a lapsed rego. If the registration ran out less than three months ago, you can still renew it, though you won’t get the full period. After three months the car has to be registered again, which needs a blue slip instead of a pink slip.

Driving an unregistered car is illegal in NSW, and it carries heavy penalties. That’s where a mobile inspection helps: we come to the car, so it doesn’t have to be driven anywhere first. Your rego has expired. What to do now goes through it step by step.

Getting the pink slip done

We do pink slips at your home or work across Sydney. A mobile pink slip is $140 on weekdays across most of Sydney, including GST. It costs more in some outer Sydney council areas, and weekends cost extra. Check your suburb’s price before you book.

Once the car passes, we lodge the result with Transport for NSW straight away, so you can renew through Service NSW.

If the rego runs out today, we do same-day pink slips. Otherwise, book now and we’ll call you to arrange a time.

Quick answers

What is the $100 rego discount?

A discount of up to $100 on the registration of a privately registered car or other light vehicle in NSW, and up to $80 on a motorcycle, for renewals from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2027. It’s applied to the renewal notice automatically.

Do caravans and trailers get the rego discount?

No. Private trailers and caravans are left out, along with business, plant, heavy and conditionally registered vehicles, and vehicles already getting a registration concession.

Do I still need a pink slip?

Yes. The discount doesn’t change what renewing needs. Most light vehicles more than five years old still need a pink slip before the rego can be renewed.

How much is the discount on six months’ rego?

$50 for a car and $40 for a motorcycle.

How long a pink slip lasts in NSW

A NSW pink slip lasts six months from the inspection, not twelve. When to book it, why the window exists, and what happens if it runs out.

Your rego has expired. What to do now

Under three months you can still renew. Over three months the car has to be registered again. Plus when you can legally drive it.
